* Cooperation *
Self-control * Responsibility * Perseverance * Respect
* Initiative * Resourcefulness *
Through Pantasia Creative Learning's experiences working with
hundreds of schools, we have observed notable differences between the attitudes, behaviors, and work
ethic of students learning in environments that FOCUS on Character versus those in schools that only
talk about Character. Experiencing the kind of impact properly implemented Character Education can
have on students, Pantasia has developed two of our programs into residencies focusing on Character
Through the Arts, Adventures in Rhythm and Music of the Caribbean. These programs are offered by
special request to schools scheduling residencies lasting 5 or more days.
Students will experience the importance of
cooperation, respect, self-control, and responsibility while participating in this residency.
Using the world famous percussion troupe, STOMP, as a model, students will compose, choreograph, and
perform their own music using unconventional instruments like pots, pans, buckets, and brooms! Group
assignments and practice sessions will lead to discussions on these character words and methods for
problem solving when there is difficulty demonstrating these traits. Residency activities culminate
with a final performance of student composed music that is not only entertaining but serves as an
assessment for the success of the residency.
Students will learn about
resourcefulness, initiative, and
perseverance through the rich culture of
Trinidad & Tobago, the steel drum, and calypso music. By tracing the evolution of the steel drum
through hands-on experience, students will learn of the hardships the people of these islands
overcame and the resourcefulness they drew upon to develop this unique instrument. Students will
create their own instruments from resources in their environment and will uncover times in their
lives when they have drawn on their sense of resourcefulness, taken initiative, or had to persevere.
Strategies for developing these traits will be demonstrated throughout the residency.
THANK YOU!
Pantasia Creative Learning would like to thank the Centennial Arts Academy in Gainesville, Georgia for a
wonderful artist-in-residence experience during the 2004-05 school year! You are truly the best
model of a Character Education School that we have ever encountered. Keep up the great work!
